It is also spelled genba. Lean Thinkers use it to mean the place where value is created. Japanese companies often supplement gemba with the related term \u201cgenchi gembutsu\u201d \u2014 essentially \u201cgo and see\u201d \u2014 to stress the importance of empiricism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A gemba walk is a\u00a0management practice for grasping the current situation through direct observation and inquiry before taking action.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The gemba is different depending on the industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table alignleft is-style-stripes\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Industry<\/th><th>Example Gemba<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Manufacturing<\/td><td>Factory floor<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Hospital<\/td><td>Operating room<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Hospitality<\/td><td>Kitchen, dining room<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Construction<\/td><td>Job site<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Software<\/td><td>Software code<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The term often is used to stress that real improvement requires a shop-floor focus based on direct observation of current conditions where work is done. For example, standardized work for a machine operator cannot be written at a desk in the engineering office, but must be defined and revised on the gemba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is essential for leaders to spend time at the gemba for two primary purposes:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>To raise consciousness about the possibilities for dramatic end-to-end improvement.<\/li><li>To assess the ability of the management system to maintain stability, which is also the basis for successful improvement.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>By walking the end-to-end value-stream leaders can identify opportunities to eliminate steps in a production or service process.
