{"id":25569,"date":"2023-05-31T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-31T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lean.org\/?p=25569"},"modified":"2023-08-23T16:20:27","modified_gmt":"2023-08-23T20:20:27","slug":"designing-the-value-stream","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lean.org\/the-lean-post\/articles\/designing-the-value-stream\/","title":{"rendered":"Designing the Value Stream"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&#8220;An important difference between a lean approach to development and traditional methods is that instead of designing a product and then &#8216;throwing it over the wall,&#8217; we focus on creating a value stream,&#8221; asserts Jim Morgan, LEI senior advisor for lean product and process development (LPPD). &#8220;And that means,&#8221; he explains, &#8220;intentionally designing each value-creating step required to deliver value to your customer \u2014 steps like manufacturing, logistics, and serviceability, which are all critical considerations when you think about the total value proposition for your customer.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This practice is so essential to developing new products, processes, and services that LEI&#8217;s LPPD team identified&nbsp;<em>Designing the Value Stream&nbsp;<\/em>as one of several LPPD guiding principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Led by Morgan, the coauthor of&nbsp;<em>The Toyota Product Development System<\/em>&nbsp;(2006) and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lean.org\/store\/book\/designing-the-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Designing the Future&nbsp;<\/em><\/a>(2019), the team has distilled what it\u2019s learned from real-world experience and research into the principles and practices of successful development teams.
