{"id":311,"date":"2020-04-24T19:42:42","date_gmt":"2020-04-24T19:42:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:10003\/?page_id=311"},"modified":"2021-05-28T11:27:24","modified_gmt":"2021-05-28T15:27:24","slug":"coaching","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.lean.org\/explore-lean\/coaching\/","title":{"rendered":"Coaching"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">Delve into the art of guiding people to develop their capability to do a job while, at the same time, ensuring the job is completed.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lean.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/mtl_leaper_coach-go-togemba-1.svg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9313\" width=\"466\" height=\"321\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Helping&nbsp;people&nbsp;reach&nbsp;their&nbsp;full&nbsp;potential&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A lean coach&nbsp;creates the conditions for&nbsp;people\u2014whether managers or line workers\u2014to&nbsp;learn and develop&nbsp;the&nbsp;capability&nbsp;to do&nbsp;their&nbsp;work&nbsp;more effectively, at&nbsp;ever-higher quality, and&nbsp;in a way that\u2019s more personally rewarding. By guiding&nbsp;people&nbsp;to view their work\u2014to see\u2014as lean thinkers&nbsp;and take ownership&nbsp;of improvement\u2014to ask why\u2014as lean practitioners, the coach&nbsp;inspires&nbsp;them to&nbsp;do their best work and&nbsp;still&nbsp;strive to do better.&nbsp;Simultaneously, the coach shares lean tools and techniques that their client can use to&nbsp;improve their work process.&nbsp;Through coaching,&nbsp;the learner&nbsp;gains a significant level of autonomy over how to do and improve their&nbsp;work.&nbsp;As such,&nbsp;lean&nbsp;coaching is rooted in the Gemba with&nbsp;Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) at its core.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lean coaches&nbsp;approach their work&nbsp;as humble learners,&nbsp;believing&nbsp;that the&nbsp;people they coach are&nbsp;experts&nbsp;in doing&nbsp;the work. The coach avoids&nbsp;telling&nbsp;people&nbsp;what to do because it robs them of the opportunity to think the problem through for themselves and takes away their ownership of the problem&nbsp;and the work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, the coach uses techniques that meet the needs of the moment, along a continuum between direct instruction and open questioning.&nbsp;The factor determining the coaching approach is based on what will,&nbsp;at&nbsp;the moment, be the most effective at achieving the organization\u2019s purpose.&nbsp;The lean coaching approach requires the coach to&nbsp;assess in the moment&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>the&nbsp;learner\u2019s needs&nbsp;in each situation\u2014for that specific problem at that&nbsp;particular&nbsp;time\u2014including their technical skill level and openness to being coached,&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>the scope and degree of the challenge or problem, whether simple or complex.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;situational&nbsp;response is required to meet&nbsp;a lean&nbsp;coach\u2019s&nbsp;dual&nbsp;responsibilities: (1) to coach others on how to improve their capabilities to complete&nbsp;a&nbsp;job and&nbsp;(2) to see that the job&nbsp;is&nbsp;done&nbsp;on time and to the customer\u2019s&nbsp;expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The coach&nbsp;encourages&nbsp;the person being coached to consider if their ideas and impressions are fact-based.&nbsp;By applying a situational yet consistently respectful and challenging guidance, the lean coach elevates&nbsp;the
