The manager oversees the development of standardized work and encourages and supports frontline workers as they improve it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Critically, the line leader&nbsp;blends expertise in both the social and technical aspects of lean thinking &amp; practice, gaining&nbsp;the trust of line workers&nbsp;(social)&nbsp;and promoting their use of&nbsp;the tools (technical).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lean.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/andon-leaper.svg\" alt=\"worker at workstation pulling an andon cord to signal an abnormality and stopping the production line.\" class=\"wp-image-9981\" width=\"483\" height=\"473\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For example,\u00a0an andon\u202frequires\u00a0the team leader\u00a0to\u00a0respond\u00a0immediately to assist\u00a0the worker who has called for help.\u00a0A\u00a0production analysis board, which captures and compares\u00a0plan-versus-actual results\u00a0along\u00a0with\u00a0a list of what didn\u2019t go according to plan,\u00a0demands that\u00a0the supervisor\u00a0supports the production team\u2019s efforts to get back on track.\u00a0And a huddle\u2014which\u00a0empowers\u00a0workers to review problems, offer countermeasures to solve them, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lean.org\/the-lean-post\/articles\/the-escalator-of-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">escalate for further help<\/a>\u2014obliging\u00a0the manager to\u00a0enable\u00a0the work team to address issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A line manager who&nbsp;can be counted on to react&nbsp;appropriately, without casting blame for problems and missed goals or immediately&nbsp;stepping&nbsp;in with &#8220;solutions&#8221; before asked,&nbsp;understands the socio-technical aspects of lean thinking &amp; practice.&nbsp;Each of these proven lean tools will work only if the line manager reliably&nbsp;responds appropriately to the worker who is sharing the problem that the tool makes visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Line manager&#8217;s priorities&nbsp;are&nbsp;tied to the organization&#8217;s strategy,&nbsp;a crucial link where&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lean.org\/the-lean-post\/articles\/the-cascade-of-hoshin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cascading<\/a>&nbsp;high-level goals&nbsp;flow to the individual&nbsp;worker.&nbsp;&nbsp;By&nbsp;ensuring the line workers understand how what they do helps the organization achieve its goals and objectives,&nbsp;guiding workers to&nbsp;create&nbsp;stable processes, and enabling&nbsp;workers to&nbsp;improve&nbsp;those processes, line managers demonstrate respect for workers and promote organizational
